Have a problem here. I have a Potato machine set up for graphical
login. However, recently the machine has decided that it won't let me log
in. When I type in my password, it looks as if it will log in, then it
brings me right back to the login screen. Any ideas as to why this is

I had this exact problem. My solution, though not that elegant, did get
me back into the machine at the local console. I simply logged in and
removed xdm, which spit me to the normal login screen and I was able to
fix the problems that I was encountering (namely a problem with

Recently I performed a apt-get dist-upgrade on my potato box. Since then
whenever I 'su' I am unable to do anything from the shell prompt. It
always gives me an error like:
bash: fork: Resource temporarily unavailable
This makes life extremely more difficult for the purpose of upgradin

I'm currently trying to help a friend install Linux onto his
system. However, we are running into some massive problems. Whenever it
gets to the point where it is checking the disk for errors, or formatting
the disk (basically any large amount of disk access), the system will lock
up completely.
