graphical login loop!!!

Have a problem here. I have a Potato machine set up for graphical login. However, recently the machine has decided that it won't let me log in. When I type in my password, it looks as if it will log in, then it brings me right back to the login screen. Any ideas as to why this is happening? I

I had this exact problem. My solution, though not that elegant, did get me back into the machine at the local console. I simply logged in and removed xdm, which spit me to the normal login screen and I was able to fix the problems that I was encountering (namely a problem with sawmill). Hope thi

I'm currently trying to help a friend install Linux onto his system. However, we are running into some massive problems. Whenever it gets to the point where it is checking the disk for errors, or formatting the disk (basically any large amount of disk access), the system will lock up completely.
