you will have to install the kernel-source package if you have not
done so.
That should work fine.

I agree that starting up X is the most difficult of them to get fixed,
but I'd not suggest you give up hope. A detailed report in the bug system
would help.

OK. Try "ae -f /etc/ae2vi.rc" on a 1.3 system sometime. It's impressive
what you can do with a 23k editor!

on the first drive.
Disk "geometry" is a fiction these days. Internally, the drives have a
different number of sectors per track depending on whether it's the
inside, middle, or the outside tracks. The drive emulates something with
fixed geometry so that BIOS doesn't get confused.
I think he needs to load the serial driver. This was a problem in some
1.2 systems.

Edit /etc/rc.boot/0setserial to set the correct interrupt numbers for all of
your serial ports. That should make the characters come back from your modem.

Since Linux is not using the BIOS hard disk driver in any case, you
should not use the BIOS hard disk timeout. I'm not sure if the "hdparm"
tool will tell a SCSI disk when it can spin down or not. You might
install "hwutils" and try that
reduce the size of the header.
