I run potato, now about 4 weeks old. I want to install apache with php (3 or 4), mod_perl and either postgresql or mysql. It seems better in the long run to master an apt-get-based method of installing them *if* that is possible--that's what I don't know. I have looked in the debian-user archive

Forget about the sound card until you get your ne2000 working. I had a similar problem with a wd80x3 card. Used a different rescue floppy to solve it. At least for the latest pre-release boot floppies, available from http://www.debian.org/~joeyh/bf/ there are several versions. Try -ide or -idepc
