Bingo!
This is exactly what I was looking for, and more. The install
was like butter, even offering a selection of which display
manager was to be default.

Can xdm be cajoled into displaying "Reboot" and/or "Shutdown"
buttons on its welcome screen?
(By which odd choice of words I mean the principal screen
presented by xdm at X start-up time, e.g. the one which queries
the user for credentials.)
Thank You

I'm trying to set up xdm. Whenever I boot the last message I see before
the login prompt is:
Not starting X Display Manager (xdm); it is not the default display manager.
I get the same message when I try to launch it manually as root. I'm
been cruising the docs & all the likely files, but don't

Hallo,
I'm using xdm and fvwm2. After the starting process of my computer,
the xdm login window pops up, but there's no background image or
color. I tried to fix this problem by changing some values in the
Xresources file in the /etc/X11/xdm directory, as well as in the
/etc/X11 directory.

The better doc is the man page, just do :
man xdm.

If anyone knows of a good doc, web site, etc. about configing XDM to look and
act snazzy, please let me know.
I just answered a question I had about X fonts. XFree86 3.2 fonts

compression formats it is not sufficient to change only the
compression of the fonts, but also the fonts.dir file in each font
directory, which list
