Maybe this has something to do with /etc/X11/Xserver:
[12:10:38 /tmp]$ cat /etc/X1
Greetings,
X will not let me log in as a regular user. I would greatly
appreciate some guidance on this one. I can go to console
and log in as a regular user, but not in X.
