Well, if wvdial dials, and detects a promt, and sends "ppp", I'm pretty
sure that the man has got the permission to dial out... no need to check
all these things. In fact, I have no idea how to help here, because I
have the same problem :-(
So, any other suggestions?

not, make it so. You could always, as suggested, make a

Have you tried "apt-get install minicom"?
You also might want to try running pppconfig instead of wvdial. This
isn't expert advice, just something else to try.

First, thanks to many who have tried to help me with multiple newbie

Now trying to connect to modem pool of my university ISP. wvdial connects,
but then says "Hu Prompt detected" and launches ppp, and then ppp
hangs, and starts trying all over again.
