Actually what happens is that the default console
on? I searched through the whole of etc if there is a
progrma that switches the resolution but there is nothing there (no call
to fbset).
Has anybody an idea what I have to do to get the vga mode I want (or
better: to keep it ;-) )

Hi,
i specified vga=9 in my lilo.conf, ran lilo and then
rebooted. I know this mode is possible because i first
did a vga=ask and scanned for the available modes.
Now, it complains that it doesn't know this mode so i
have to do a scan first and then it adds the newly
found modes to the list so i c

Text or VGA mode? I guess you faced the kernel framebuffer.
To disable it, use video=vga16:off.

If you are changing the vga line in lilo.conf you need to reinitialise lilo
to make it notice the changes i.e. type "lilo" on cmd line without any
arguments. I'm not too sure about grub but I imagine there's a similar
procedure.

Subject: Console vga mode
My Debian woody system boots into a 80x30 console.
Sometimes I'd like to have the old 80x25 screens back, how?
I have tried booting with vga=normal and vga=ask (and then '0') but it does
not change anything.
How do I switch to 25x80?
Thank

I placed a "vga=ask" line in my Debian 2.2 lilo.conf
file and re-ran lilo. When I re-boot, lilo askes me
for video mode. I press "enter" and the following
seven modes are listed:

3 0F03 80x28
