synaptic toolbar search window

Hi, yesterday before I screwed things up big time synaptic had a window on the toolbar which you could type in the name of the package you were looking for. I can't see any options for it in the pulldown menus, is it an add on ? the version I'm using is o.75.3. Suffering badly from the inverse M
