Well wait a second, guys. gethostbyname() is trying to look up the
*username* not some hostname or something. This is bizarre. Does sudo
normally try a gethostbyname() on the username?

A few days ago, sudo (potato) stopped working for me. I get the
following error message:
$ sudo ppplog
sudo: unable to lookup via gethostbyname(): Resource
temporarily unavailable
Segmentation fault
I see that a new version of sudo was installed a few days ago. It
works fine on another compute
