Is it an old USR modem? I found some interesting notes about USR modems having
difficulty just after a ppp connection is made. Setting a register fixed my
problem (USR Spostser 28800 V.34). See

Oops, just realised,
The correct way to use noauth is to place it in the peers file,
/etc/ppp/peers/[name].
Leave 'noauth' out of the ppp options file.
Regards.
This might help. But then again.
In file /etc/ppp/options, make sure the following line is present;
noauth

It means that the ISP wants to use PAP or CHAP authentication.

Run pppconfig, select 'PAP' authentication, and connect with 'pon' and
disconnect with 'poff'.

I'm trying to connect to the Toronto Freenet through Linux. I've been able
to connect with Windows easily enough, but the regular chatscripts and
peers/* setups don't seem to work.
The best I can get is the following in my ppp.log:

Hi,
I have had some problems with my PPP connection lately (potato). I use Xsip to
dial up. Works fine. Connects and DNS is set up. Everything is normal until I
try do use an inet app. Nothing works! Not the browser, not IRC, no ping and no
fetchmail/exim even!
I have reinstalled all the network

Akop,
Did you try to dial you ISP with a terminal emulator, like minicom? This is
a good way to find out exactly what it expects as far as send and expect

The log looks similar to mine. My ISP uses CHAP. Have you tried making a
chap-secrets and using the name option in options?

Ok, I have set up ppp connections several times but I am not an expert.
I am trying to connect to my new ISP, INTX.NET (if anyone else is using

figuring out what kind of strings my ISP sends and expects. I have

Dear Fellow Debianites,
Thanks in advance for any help with this strange problem I am having. I
am trying to set up a PPP server at work. It is a Debian machine
running hamm with ppp version 2.3.5-2. Same setup at my home-machine as
well. I am setting this up in the server with mgetty and AutoPPP.

Here is the latest entry from my /var/log/ppp.log file, only the last
line was copied, but that's the one I'm questioning.
Mar 28 22:07:29 jim pppd [414]: Cannot determine Ethernet address for
proxy ARP
Don't know what it means, but I remember something about ARP from the
Kernel compilation.

To get mine working, I had to instruct getty not to die if it didn't see
the Carrier-Detect/DSR/CTS set. Otherwise, it wigged if the cable wasn't
hooked up. Getty would respawn faster than a ra
Well, I fixed the problem, but I still don't understand it.
First, it has nothing to do with the kernels (whew).
At the same time I was building the new 2.0.27 kernel, I was experimenting
with setting up ppp over a nul modem cable (with little luck, I might
add). After giving up on the ppp issue, I
I have recently been experiencing a problem with ppp. The problem began
when I built myself a new 2.0.27 kernel, but does not seem to be related
to the kernel.
Here's the problem: After a boot up, I can ppp to my ISP just fine the
first time, but after dropping the connection, I can not establish a
