Try clearing the bogus mounts with 'umount' instead of 'smbumount'.
That works for me in the same situation.

I've been hitting the same recurring problem, Kent. The way that I've
found (under potato-debian with smbfs 2.0.5a) is to use 'umount', NOT
'smbumount
