book I looked at online expressly said the opposite
about dselect and apt-get. The book is in German "Debian GNU/Linux

It sounds like good advice to upgrade to potato first and then take the

It sounds to me like you should consider upgrading to the testing
distribution. You could certianly upgrade a potato or even slink system
to all these things peicemeil, but these are such major components with
such far-reaching dependnacies that you would end up with a system
composed mostly of packages from testing anyway.

3) The old methods (dftp?) seems to be what you are left with.

Hi,
There is packages for slink, but the package list refer the download point to
"main".
I think the only way to make our apt-get works is to mirror the whole copy of
the slink. :(
Will this keep on in every release, old users could not benefit from Debian
mirrors

Doesn't ftp://ftp.debian.org/ hold only the current and future releases?
Perhaps you might want to look for sites that keep old Debian releases?

Hello,
We have some servers still running old version of slink and don't want
them to potato yet. However we still want to update our slink distribution.
After we change the apt-get sources.list to:

I can retrieve the package list
The Background:
I originally installed my slink base system from the net and added
some extras using the dselect front-end to apt-get via ftp. This
worked fine, but a little too slowly for my liking over a 33k modem,
so I picked up a CD set.
Vaguely remembered reading something about how to
Slink doesn't support installing the base system via http. (but
once base is installed you can use apt-get/dselect to install
packages via http)
You can however make about 10 floppies (rescue + drivers + 7 * base disks
IIRC)
There are other ways, but that depends on what sort of other mac
I want to install slink/stable on a new machine initially via floppies, then off a network (http).
For some reason (unlike previously) when I go to install the base system, i
t does not give me the "network install" option. All the others
are there i.e. "cdrom, NFS, mounted
