I had the same problem. scponly works fine on my debian sarge box but not my
etch box.
The sftp client just died after authentication. The following fixed it:
'mknod -m 666 /HOMEDIR_OF_CHROOTED_USER/dev/null c 1 3'

solution that worked for me.

Dear all, I'm trying to use scponly but I don't succed. I have the
following information for you please:
- Debian Etch with "apt-get install scponly"
- Setup with chroot
- I execute the "setup_chroot" script and follow all the steps
- I get this messages during installation:
