Some new information about SANE scanner problem:
Debian (scanner not working): libsane 1.0.24 libsane-common 1.0.24
Ubuntu (scanner working): libsane 1.0.23 libsane-common 1.0.23
To experiment, I used synaptic to remove everything related to SANE on
Debian Jessie, and then compiled SANE 1.0.23

There is no group "scanner" on my system.
When the scanner is being plugged in, a device is created with root:root
as its owner, hence only root can use the scanner.
It doesn't even work as root.

try loading the scanner module with the manufacturer and product numbers of
your scanner (I think you can find those on the sane page, or try looking

I'm trying to get my scanner working. It's listed under /proc/bus/usb/ as
shown below. Hotplug loads libusbscanner with some chown errors also shown
below. When I start kooka, I'm not presented with my scanner as an optional
input device. How can I further trace this problem. I guess theres

Hi there
I have an old Epson GT-5000 scanner which is not supported by my Windows
system (Win 2k pro), but which is still supported by SANE, and so I
installed, and it works fine. However, I can only use the scanner when
logged in as root. I know that this is a known issue, and is connected

I have scsi generic support, and aha152x support compiled in the kernel (potato
with 2.2.13) and have sane installed. The scsi card is Adaptec 1505. The kernel
recognizes the card fine. I didn't have the sg devices in my /dev directory, so
I did a MAKEDEV sg to make them. I made the sym. link fro
