Hi, I would like to migrate to a new server. It seems like a good idea
to use rdist to keep the various config files in synce between the
machines. This works very well if I run rdist as ordunary user, but not
as root. This is required to be able to work with files in /etc.
I get 'Conne
I need to use rdist to sync some system files from one machine to
another. I am unable to access the second machine as root. I have made
a .rhosts in the second machines /root dir and tried to put

Hello everyone,
I'm having a little trouble w/ distfiles for Rdist.
I want to duplicate directory "web_site" from host "source" to host "target"
in path /tmp on "target".
I found I could do this by:

One other thing I've just noticed about my potato upgrade, rdist is no
longer around. It used to be part of netstd, which was broken up, but

You can use standard rdist over ssh (rdist -P ssh). Authentication can
be either automatically (usin

I know it must be an FAQ, but does there exist a secure replacement
for rdist, one which would not require having a /root/.rhosts file?
Those things make me understandably paranoid. I'm not quite sure what
a secure replacement would look like though; wou

man rdist, look at the option for rsh path; replace the path
to rsh with the path to ssh--they're functionally equivalent
(although you might want to add parameters for compress
On a related note, is there any way to make rdist use ssh?

First, make a file "distfile", which will look something like:

MACHINES = ( machine-a machine-b machine-c )
FILES= ( /u
I just did this.
You'd have to set up root with permission for rsh by putting a .rhosts in
the root home directory.
Beware of security issues though...
