i first installed the 32Mb.
result: - win95 dos box hangs
- linux dos box has problems
- X runs without problems
then i installed the S3Virge that can acces

-pentium166
-32MbRam
-S3-Virge (3DVGA digimate)
-adaptec2940scsi (sda,sdb=harddisks)
-atapi cdrom
-kernel 2.0.30 (not all packages are upgraded to debian 1.3.1, i think
