problem of boot

Hi freinds, I have the kernel 2.2.12 of the redhat and I installed on it a new kernel 2.3.99. But after the installation the PC boot with the old kernel and the file init.rd was not created and when I try to create it, I cant. When I try to lance a tool of configuration the system says "bad ker
