was using lprng but printtool forced the change (it also forces the
installation of gs instead of gs-aladdin. I'm on a force-depends merry
go-round)

Do not get me wrong. I am not putting printtool down without reason.
I am the one who added feature of uniprint support to printtool in
original RH version and I like this nice gui-tool.
It seems, at one point in potato before official release, there was working
printtool
I didn't know printtool existed for Debian, although I did use printtool
when I ran Red Hat. For Debian, try running magicfilter. I have an HP
DeskJet 812C (the same printer, just a different number painted on) and
magicfilter set it up nicely on my Debian potato box.

printtool using alien... The installation goes fine (except it wants
control-panel also installed, but this is also easy to do), but then
when I try to add and configure my printer here I find some problems:
