It's working!
I don't really understand why, but I was able to narrow it down to lpr as the
culprit (with several peoples help). So, after reinstalling lprng several

I checked the permissions of the log directories and files and the files are

I tried 'lpr -D 1 ' and got this:

So it isn't the kernel config that's wrong.

I tried the echo redirect below and was told 'permission denied', so I tried it
as root and it worked, the printer printed the message.
I chmod 0666 /dev/lp0 and it worked without su.
I tried tried lpr -Plp and it wouldn't work with or without su.

Anyone,
I recently got the newest Dell Latitude CPx laptop and I've installed it with

get installed automatically while installing debian, the lp-module for the
printer-port included. If you didn't configure this during installation,
you can do it by running the "modconf" command, which allows you to load
and configure modules after your installation is completed.

Did you configure the during the installation of
Debian? If not that may explain the problem. I'm not very experienced with

Debian if it's easy enough.

I tried changing CMOS so that IRQ 7 is Legacy/ISA instead of PNP, but that

Any other suggestions?
Thanks.
Dear Debian users,
I am planing to buy a printer port MO. But I am worry about that
Debian/Linux does not have driver to use it. I know that Linux
can use SCSI MO, or SCSI ZIP or printer port ZIP, but how about
printer port MO? Is anyone has the experience?
If Debian can use the printer port MO

Hi...
Umm, can you write to the printer port directly?
i.e.: cat /etc/passwd > /dev/lp1 (prints userlist on the printer, without
passwords if you have shadows installed; if you don't it isn't recommended
you print this particular file ;)

Hmmm. Good question. The default kernel w/ Debian includes
everything. Otherwise, compile your own. Then you know what is and is
not included. Besides, compiling your own kernel
