Chances are it's not. Chances are its on your end :) What i suggest is
you check your INIT string,
I have exactly the same problems on a 2.0.36 kernel (slink - and whatever
ppd comes with that) (i.e. regular echo request failures and hangups).
I can't stay on line for more than about 10 minutes at a time max.
