I solved the problem. I used the stock kernel.org 2.4.17 kernel instead
of the debian kernel-

As far as I know yes. I now have two nvidia-kernel packages, one for
2.4.6 and for 2.4.17, both installed, with their respect NVdriver in
/lib/modules/2.4.6 and /lib/modules/2.4.17.
