mgetty hangs machine

i use the following line in /etc/inittab to make mgetty provide me with a login prompt through modem dialin: T3:23:respawn:/sbin/mgetty -D -x0 -n3 -s 57600 ttyS0 this works fine except when i turn the modem off, then the entire machine hangs - no keyboard access to the console, not network acc
