In /etc/security/pam_env.conf, is ${PATH} supposed to "see" the value
of PATH set by /etc/login.defs?
If I set PATH in login.defs (using ENV_PATH=xxx) and set PATH=${PATH}:yyy
in pam_env.conf, the setting from login.defs doesn't show up (PATH gets
set to ":yyy").

Hi,
Just wanted to know, why I can't use
LOGIN_STRING "%s's password: "
in login.defs.
The default password string (Password: ) won't change.
I've tried it on several Linuxes (RH, Slack, SuSE) and
it worker perfectly.
Thanks in advantage...

Read the info file on
evice
always shows up in ifconfig and there's no way to tell it from
ifconfig alone.
So I did a
'route | grep ippp0 | grep default | grep -q UG' which works most of
the time but fails sometimes. I don't know why.
Any ideas?

I did an apt-get dist-upgrade to potato the other day, and my login.defs
no longer seems to be used. I assume this probably has something to do
with pamification. Any pointers anyone can give will be appreciated.

That wouldn't work. I think what he's looking for is a way to put people
into the group when they're logged in at the cons
I mean in /etc/groups add a group "xdm". List all users that use xdm in it.
Then add this new group xdm to the floppy line.

? What do you mean by XDM group?

May be an easier way but how about making an XDM group? Put the
users in that. Then let group xdm be a member of floppy.

Linux, because I'd like to *get there* today
Hi,
Am I missing something obvious? I like it very much the way I can
put CONSOLE_GROUPS in login.defs because I want the person sitting on the
console to be able to read the floppy drive with mtools and *only* that
person. Problem is I had to set up a couple of boxes to use xdm against
I need to set TZ to the local timezone (CST6CDT) on my hamm boxes so pine
knows the local time. I have set the following in /etc/login.defs:
ENV_TZ TZ=CST6CDT
which did not set TZ for any users. I also tried setting:
ENV_TZ /etc/tzname
and putting "CST6CDT" in /
I get the following message when I log on as 'su'.
configuration error - unknown item 'ISSUE_FILE' (notify administrator)
I cleared this out in the login.defs file (per help on this list) for
a normal login by setting up a null /etc/issue file. I can login now
