so, while putting the line
/usr/bin/X11/xset r rate 255 80 &
in my ~/.xsession file seemed to work fine, when i rebooted just now
(replugging fan &c.), the keyboard was all erratic again. apparently
this hadn't taken effect, or was just ignored in the starting of xdm
... hm. again clueless.
