Similar issue here, But I had to remove the glx to start X again.
A module called nv_glx is loading and it is conflicting with the glx.
My monitor is suffering from the dim display problem too.
This problem only exists with the nvidia driver. With the vesa the
display is normal.

I'm trying to determine if I have a bug and where I should report it to.
I'm running debian testing, with kde as my desktop.
Whenever I close an application which is from kde, I get this error
message:
