dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
: then when asked where the mouse is choose the:
/dev/input/mice
: this option works for me in both cases where I plug the mouse in a USB port
or use the adapter and plug in to the PS2 port.

I hate to ask...but have you just tried plugging it in? I just got an
optical mouse for use with my sarge laptop, and it "just worked" when
I plugged it in.
