On my system I do: dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 : then when asked where the mouse is choose the: /dev/input/mice : this option works for me in both cases where I plug the mouse in a USB port or use the adapter and plug in to the PS2 port. I'm running udev, but I think it is the same with
