I've installed Xandros 4, a Debian derivative, on an
external USB hard disk drive, and I'm trying to boot it from
there. My laptop is able to boot USB storage devices, and
I've succeeded in doing that with several other Linux
distros (including the Debian-based Ubuntu and MEPIS),

Hi,
I have a debian-kernel 2.6.9 and I try to use bootsplash. The
framebuffer is ok (vesafb 1024x768x16). Bootsplash works
anytime but at boot-time (each console has a picture and the
first console has an animation at shutdown-time.). However
there's nothing during the boot on the first console.

Good luck. :-)
Cheers,

I finally got it to work.
I re-read one of the patches I applied before, and I noticed something
at the top of the file. The text said I should add
`ramdisk_blocksize=4096' to the boot parameters. I did that, and the
system booted flawlessly. (Except for one typo in the initrd image,
which I could

Cheers,

I just tried the following:
- build a kernel (2.4.5 with LVM patched to the latest beta version)
with CRAMFS support,
- create an initrd image using mkinitrd,
- boot the new kernel using GRUB.
The boot process proceeds until the kernel tries to mount the ramdisk
image. The last message shown is:
