iceweasel (firefox) and Hummingbird Exceed

I have terrible display update performance when using iceweasel with Hummingbird Exeed on a windows box as the X-server. This started with the etch version of icewasel. I assume its something to do with the X-protocol and/or the network settings, but I can't figure out how to proceed. Any ideas?
