Thanks - but that was not the problem.
One thing I notice is that when I trace the connection, iceweasel
isn't opening any fonts on the X-server. Could it be doing everything
with bit streams to the X-server?

the etch version of icewasel.
I assume its something to do with the X-protocol and/or the network
settings, but I can't figure out how to proceed.
Any ideas?
