No need for scripts. Run pppconfig as root and answer the questions
(sounds like you will want to choose chat authentication)

I've done what you want with a linux box (Slink) and several winthings,
I used ISDN there, but I don't think that makes much different with a
analogue modem. You should use diald to bring up the connection if
needed. You can do IP masquerading with ipchains.
How does your /etc/init.d/network looks
How are you connecting the two machines? If you do not have a hub, you need to
have a crossover cable to go direct from one ethernet card to the other

I seem to have a double problem to use ppp.
1) If I try pppd as a normal user, I get an error that I miss write access, and
pppd exits immediately. This should be easy...
2) (tougher) If I try as a superuser, I can connect, ping, etc... But if I try
