wow, linux is pretty terrible.
I did a complete install again (removing the SSD harddrive from the
system completely).
It rebooted and grub is working now and have two options (single user
mode is the second).
I try to boot to both of them and it just says

partitions into a 13 gig for windoze and a 7 gig for linux. In the installation
program, when I get to the "Partition the Hard Disk" screen, cfdisk quits with
"Bad Primary Partition".

No. The browser can usually guess, but sometimes it guesses wrong (as it did
here). The usual method
