I'm not sure if you are aware of this, but for the 2.6 series of kernel, IDE
cdroms are no longer SCSI emulated

a mix of testing/unstable, xine-gui with sound fine
under a 2.4.24-smp kernel
ok, installed 2.6.2-1-686-smp, figured out that i needed to
add a couple of files, ok one would have done,
in /etc/modprobe.d
