The most noticeable thing that happens with gdm running is I get to what
sounds like a login screen and key in my user id then I've tried both with
return and tab after that and key in my password and all gdm returns is an
error beep. If I hit control-alt-fx and usually f1 and drop to command

After having done a clean install of debian and gotten it up to unstable
and having done a clean install of gnome and gnome-orca then having
removed execute persissions from /etc/init.d/gdm script I rebooted

Well, I installed the single xfce4 meta package and it dragged in a few
extras and it all seems to work great, but I miss some of the Gnome
applet stuff, so I guess I will look into the plugins etc that you
mentioned Micha.
Thanks for the replies.

The only thing that may take some work is making

To install Gnome under Sid, is it recommended to simply do:
apt(titude)-get install gnome-desktop-environment
Or is it better to install things piecemeal:
apt(titude)-get install gnome-core gdm etc.
Thanks for any suggestions

Hi Everyone-
I'm trying to install Ximian GNOME with apt, but I am having some
problems. I've added the following line to my sources.list file:
deb http://red-carpet.ximian.com/debian stable main
and then updated the package lists. I follow that up with:
apt-get install task-ximian-gnom
Dear Nate,

Hi all,
I address the following questions to this mailing list because I do not know
yet if they are specific to Debian implementation
I finally reach to install gnome with Enlightenment as wm with the last

Hey,
I'm using apt-get (with ftp.us.debian.org unstable main contrib non-free)
and trying to install gnome, but nothing seems to be working.
Assuming I'm staying with a binary distribution, is the only way to get
gnome working by using RPM? Is that safe with debian, or will it screw up

I'm trying to install Gnome using the instructions at
http://www.gnome.org/start/getting_debian.shtml
They say to add a line to /etc/apt/sources.list (which I've done); it now
looks like:
deb ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free
deb ftp://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/debian dists/
