You're making life difficult on yourself. I don't think Scwm is GNOME compliant -- so don't try to use it with GNOME. Select either the "Xsession" or "Debian" sessian option from GDM to use Scwm *without* GNOME. You really shouldn't need to muck with the scripts in /etc/gdm/, possibly the config
