I have the same issue. Have you found a workaround?
By the way, I've recently updated the kernel and now it's not a complete
freeze but is still unusable.

The 7770 is currently not supported by the open radon driver in testing
so I tried to go with fglrx.
I follow the instructions in the debian wiki
http://wiki.debian.org/ATIProprietary
and created a xorg.conf with 'aticonfig --initial'. When ever I try to
start X now with fglrx turned on my PC
