Hi!
I've been running a server with Debian GNU/Linux stable for a few years
now. Due to some reasons I recently upgraded to unstable. I didn't
change the configuration of exim and fetchmail, but now I'm
experiencing problems.
The relevant part of my /etc/fetchmailrc looks like this:
poll POP3_SE

To work with my ISP 's email cap limit, it seems to be a good idea to
use a local server to fetch the emails first, and then use a client
machine to finally retrieve them later (client machine is not always

You need to check your system log to see what is happening. I would do
following as root.
1. apt-get install mc
2. poke around /var/log with mc to see all what is happening.
3. check /etc/exim.conf especially around procmail.
exim use fetchmail as local MDA only if it is configured so.

When I send a message to myself (maurizio) locally exim passes the message
correctly to procmail (I have a ~/.procmailrc) which moves it to ~/Mail/In
which is read by Mutt.

In previous flavors of Linux and Freebsd, I had sendmail
running. I would do a "fetchmail" to get my email from
my ISP, and I had a ".forward" file that would send my
mail to "procmail" for sorting/filtering.

Sure, just use fetchmail to grab mail from the net and put it on the
local machine. Here's the strategy:
Configure Exim to be an internet site using a smarthost (option #2).
