Swerving completely off topic here, but I see a lot of people do this. But
if you don't like the default color depth that X comes up in, did you know
you can change the default?

the even shorter answer: run XF86Setup, which now lets you set the default
depth. It's part of the xserver-vga16 package.

How can I convince xdm that I want to run at a 32-bit color depth by
default rather than 8 bpp? Do I need to 'hack up' my XF86Config file so
that 32 bpp is the only one availible, or can I somehow pass a parameter to
the X server when it is started up?
Thanks,
Chris

How do I append XF86Config to get a startx default of 16? I know it's
gotta be in the display section, but where and how?

This is a very common procedure, however, I think it is better to edit
XF86Config file and isert this line:
DefaultColorDepth 16

put something like this in /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers
:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X vt7 -bpp 16

Edot /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers The last line is like
:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X
you can put -bpp 16 or whatever there. You can also make it load on a
different display.

Hi,
It looks like the X server I'm using (XSuSE_NVidia) doesn't understand the
`DefaultColorDepth 16' directive I've put in the Screens section of
XF86Config. I'd prefer to start X with xdm rather than startx -- is there
anywhere I could specify the color depth elsewhere? I looked for
somewhere
