boot failure -- checking the boot partition

Out of the blue, Debian failed to boot. I have loaded debian-live-500-i386-rescue.iso, and now I would like to mount the boot partition /dev/hda1 and...oops, I can't mount /dev/hda1 without root permission, and I can't get root permission without access to hard drive! Is there a way out of this f
