1) Perhaps you should try one or two other sites in order to verify if this is

Got a major problem here. I cannot update my potato installation: all
connections in apt or ftp, apt directly or through dselect, are timed out
as soon as they try to download anything. Manual downloding with ftp from
the very same sites okay. Unfortunately the diagnostics are really ju
