Seeing someone elses post maybe I am wrong about apt compiling for you.
If apt does not allow php and mysql to communicate my previous post
describes how to compile by hand.

Alas, No. See my post from a bit earlier (Like a few hours--I am using
postgresql instead of mysql but the install is basically the same).
Basically, you can install Apache from apt. You can install Mysql from
apt. You will need to get the source for php4 and install yourself.

I'm at the point of needing to get my apache/mysql/php4/tomcat environment up
and running on this new box. In the past I've always compiled these from
source downloaded from the various places. Is this the best method? This is
just for development purposes (I'm a web developer trying to free
