Thanks, I've realised what I've done. I've copied and
pasted the menu entry for the recovery option for my
new kernel. I'm used to Lilo and tut, tut didn't read
the grub documentation thoroughly.

That kernel is being booted into single-user mode.
Check your boot-loader configuration file -- probably /boo
