Did you try to link the X server like this:
ln -s /usr/bin/X11/XFree86 /etc/X11/X
It will probably work (works for me).

I recently changed from woody to unstable. Initially had some
problems because some packages had been removed and others had not
been installed. But by repeated use of apt-get -f now it seems OK.
apt-get check gives no errors.
However I have problems running Xwindows. I have an TVGA8900D
