Actually, I should've asked: Are you a member of the group "cdrom" and
does the drive device that represents your cdrom have perms root.cdrom ?

yup.
i racked my brains on this; i sent in a bug report. it happened right

The Debian xmcd package comes with a program called xmcdconfig. Try running

hi,
i'm trying to configure xmcd for my Sony CD-RW CRX100E cdrom drive. it
fails to open /dev/scd0.
the FAQ suggests a test - dd if=/dev/scd0 of=/dev/null bs=2k count=10.
the test fails. according to the faq it indicates no support for
iso-9660/high-sierra filesystem.

I had already converted /var/xmcd to group audio after seeing some of
the other suggestions. But I went ahead and installed the new version
since it fixes the directory permissions itself.

I don't think there is a config.sh with xmcd.
I think you want to run /usr/sbin/xmcdconfig as root to configure it.

I asked this question yetsterday buy didnt have mail running so might have
missed the response. But could someone mail me the config.sh script the
xmcd seems to need. I can't get mine to work because that script is not
there so it doesn't recognize my cdrom device and such..
thank you.
I installed xmcd fresh today but it seems the install didn't create the
config.sh. Could someone look if they have theirs..its usually in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xmcd/config/ and perhaps mail it to me or something.
Maybe there is another problem that i don't know about.

I can not run xmcd after my recent upgrade from stable
