I am a reasonable newbie to Debian and have been trying unsucceffully to get

Hello all:
I am trying to get Debian running. The sequence of events:
1. installed 'woody' from floppy disks with the bf2.4 (what ever that
stands for) images (I wanted to use reiserfs). The install when OK. Got
a basic 'cli' Debian system.
2. Did an 'apt-get dist-upgrade' to 'sarge'. All when OK

Hi,
Last week I installed Debian on the spare [SCSI] hard drive in my Dell Precision 610.
I had some network troubles, which folks on this list kindly helped me with, but X11
kept bombing. It would try to run, maybe three times, then ask me if I wanted to view
the output of the error log.

Hi List,
Sorry to bother you all again. As some of you told me, I setup a minimal
system, and installed xfree86 and kde with apt-get. Now that the installed
completed correctly, I'm experiencing my next problem: startx sets my screen
into graphic mode and I see two stripes in gray (looks somehow
I had the same problem with a similar NVIDIA GeForce video card. XFree86
failed with the "(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable
configuration." log message.
The problem seemed to be frame buffering. Try setting UseFBDev to false in
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4.
That worked in my case. I hope
Hi,
first of all install the relevant XFree86 packages ... then/or run
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 to set up your system.

I have now tried to install Debian 3 times without succes on an i586
which has run RedHat6.2 until I began my Debian experiments...
I have 2 good years experience with Linux through RedHat and have no
problems with the course of the install. Every thing seems to be running
as expected until I reac

After I setup Xfree using the configurator I saved the config file and
the machine rebooted. When the machine gets to the login prompt
after the reboot, the Monitor starts to blink and I can't log in. It
looks like X windows is trying to start as I see a line before the
login saying that xdm

Robert,
Had that EXACT same problem. There's a fix on the XFree86 web site.
Anyway, get to /dev (?) and do a ./MAKEDEV tty0.
