I also had this problem and solved deleting all unwanted modes in
XF86Config. So a line like

Well I tried this, commented out the "Virtual" setting and indeed it kept me
from "panning" to the extended screen, only problem was that the extended
sections did not "condense" in to the physical limits of the screen.
Went back and removed the comment mark and restarted X11, still had no
ability

General question:
I have a Toshiba laptop (Portege 610CT)
I have v2.1 installed and running, X11 with fvwm2 running with good
screen resolution and 16bpp colors.
Currently the resolution is set to 800x600, but the display still thinks
that it is in 640x480 mode. This causes a lot of dynamic scr
