Thanks for the info!
In the meantime I managed to avoid the problem by editing
the menu entry for mc replaceing it with something like this:
xterm -font insert-font-descriptor-here -e mc -c
This worked fairly well.

Systemwide: /etc/X11/Xresources/
User: ~/.Xdefaults or the directory that was supposed to replace it --

default start in a maximized terminal window.
