I'm not sure what the best way is but . . .
find the offending ximian package (you said dpkg -l|grep ximian which
sounds good) and run:
#apt-cache show
this should tell you all about the ximian package and the Debian package

It's a bad idea to run Ximian with Debian. Ximian messes stuff up all
the time (even in stable) so you'll have to keep dealing with stuff like
this over and over again. My suggestion, purge your syste

Hi!
After an install of Ximian gnome for potato with red-carpet (X was not
touched) my woody laptop won't start X with
"Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'"
My other machine with the same config, as far as I can see, in
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 (except for the driver of course)

Try to reinstall the xfonts-base package. It worked for me
when I was using X4.

Help! I just lost X overnight.
I'm getting that idiot fatal server error, "could not open default font
'fixed'", again. My FontPath is /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc and I did a
fresh mkfontdir in that directory. Still no go. I have both xfs and
xfstt running, and nothing. What just happened?
