sound card for a second computer and hear that there are better devices

I can't get audacity to work with my usb sound card. I retried on a
fresh install of debian etch. According to information from the
alsa-user mailing list, audacity should work with /dev/dsp. My usb sound

aplayer and arecord work fine wit

The input quality of my laptop's sound card is rather bad. I'm thinking

sound experience on using the laptop with my hifi set.
Requirements:
- high quality audio input and output (preferably better audio quality
than mp3)
