xhost +localhost is better.
But if xforwarding is enabled in ssh I prefer ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED]

You can configure gdm to allow root login.
As user open xterm
su
root password
gdmconfig
Under options choose Expert and allow root to login with gdm.
