The only answer I could find was to put this line into my
.bash_profile and .bashrc files:
setterm -blength 0
That "solved" the problem without actually solving anything. How the
latest kernels get around not even having the hardware pcspkr module
loaded baffles me.
Easy enough to fix on a tower

In GNOME, you can try by disabling it via gconf editor:
/apps/metacity/general/audible_bell [ ]

Hello:
I upgraded from lenny to squeeze, overall it was ok, but I still
couldn't silence the system beep..

in
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
this used to work in lenny, but stopped working in squeeze,

echo ^V^G . the ^V tells the shell not to interpret the control
character following it, which is also useful when removing the ^M's from

I want to write a shell script that beeps on a certain event. I don' want the
output from the soundcard but from the system speaker, like when I do
something wrong. But it would be nice if I could make the sound shorter or
longer than that, or two short sounds. What's the command for that?
