Hello,
on a low voltage cpu system I can see that the creation of an 1 GB swap
file can take several minutes. (The file-system is on SD-card which
write about 6-7 MB/s).
As I see fallocate can do this job much faster, so why you don't use this?
fallocate is also part of the util-linux package wh

I don't think so. No problems with older versions, and never had any
other problem with the disk - nothing in the logs, no smart warnings, no
data corruption.

According to the Google study (about hdd failures) a bad result from
S.M.A.R.T. is almost always bad, but a good result doesn't mean the hdd
is ok.

starting up lenny, my machine hanged on 'activating swapfile swap' (or
something like that)
starting up my machine a second and third time did not give any trouble
at all.
is there a generally known reason for a computerstart hanging on
activating a swapfile?

Hi all,
Hope you enjoyed the thanksgiving.
I have a tiny problem about my debian/sid. When I boot my debian, it
hangs at activating swapfile swap ...done.
Here is what I get from the screen:
Mounting local filesystems ... done
Activating swapfile swap .. done
It just hangs here. Then I press

Hello,
today i created a swapfile instead of a partition, because i think
it's more dynamic. I only see advantages using a swapfile. So first of
all, I'd like to know about disadvantages, because almost everybody
uses a swap partition. And finally I need to know what to change on my

There isn't one !!!. (You can manually set the file to a zero/small size
in the Virtual Memory tab, but there is no need.) What they mean is to
delete the win386.swp (???) file from the harddrive because it is

I'm installing 2.2 on a friends computer. He wants to keep windows
onboard, but I seem to have misplaced my old PartitionMagic CD and don't
want to spend the money to buy another one. Hence, I'm using FIPS.
Reading the help file for fips, it tells me that I have to remove the

Hi,
It seems that this mailing list is not only talking about Debian
specifics but also Linux in general, so I have questions on Linux
netboot.
Some days ago I installed several Linux clients with no harddisk to boot
from a server. The clients had 32MB RAM; this could be quite a lot, but

my question is this: i'm soon to be getting more ram, and i was
wondering if there's a way to resize my swap to make use of it. i have
16 ram now, and my swap partition is about 32 megs. is it possible to
make it bigger after i move up to 32-48 ram without messing with
partitions again? i'm a relat

Hi,
I was wondering whether there are any benefits to using a swap partition
as opposed to using a swap file.
I am running debian 1.3 on a system with relatively low resources (200
megs HD, 12 megs ram), and have it set up to have a 12 meg swap partition.
But, today I found out about mkswap and ho
